Amazing Amazon Dupes

Amazing Amazon Dupes

Can you actually find good dupes for high end products on Amazon? As someone who is a self proclaimed shopaholic, I am curious to find out if you can find trendy but cheap items online that are just as good if not better than their high end counterparts.

Now I am all about splurging on something you really love and will wear for years come, but sometimes the trend is so fleeting it feels silly to shell out the big bucks for a single season stunner. Enter to the famous influencer approved Amazon dupe! I have always been apprehensive to buy certain things on Amazon, especially fashion or beauty items because of the horror stories I have heard of people getting junk items. Recently though I have been shifting my mindset and have become more open to dupes/ faux items as a way to have fun and get creative with popular trends.

To embark on this journey, I purchased a handful of items to test to see if you truly can find a cheap dupe on Amazon for some of the most popular items influencers swear by. Reviews are king on Amazon so for this experiment I tried to stick with items that had 4-5 stars for 90% of their reviews and worked to find items that were affordable but also cute/ versatile enough that I could style them multiple ways.

Item 1) Schoolgirl Tennis Skort – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07P9PXQFM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This one was funny for me since I did wear a plaid skirt when I was in high school in NY at a girls Catholic school, so something about wearing a little plaid tennis skirt felt oddly homey.

I was really skeptical of this one mostly because the reviews were sketchy AF on this listing, but I did some measurements and opted for a larger size based on reviews saying it ran small.

Overall, I give this purchase a 6 – Is it a cute tennis skort that is “on trend” yes, but is it high quality and thick, no. Does it looks like a costume.. A little bit. My general verdict on this one is that it is perfect for the trend. I will wear it once or twice while the style is in and then will likely leave this skirt in my closet for Halloween next year. Not bad, but not great!

Item 2) Seamless Halo Hair Extensions – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D28PHD4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have been wanting to invest in hair extensions ever since I started my hair re-growth journey. (Read more on my hair journey here – https://wordpress.com/post/whowodwear.com/198) but professional grade hair extensions are not cheap and I have been on the fence on wether it is a worthy investment. For me I don’t plan to wear them every day and likely will only use them for going out or special occasions and because of this I decided it was wise to see if I could find an inexpensive set as a test run before taking the plunge into buying real ones.

Enter my Amazon dupe quest! My goal was to find a good color match and good length/texture match and to spend less than $20. So I began combing through reviews and looking at photos and decided on a dark brown faux hair halo for under $9.99.

The verdict – Sub 10 dollar hair extensions are exactly like they sound, very cheap/fake looking however I have to give this purchase a hard 3/10 as the length and color was 100% spot on and once applied correctly I have to say it looked pretty damn good for 10 bucks. But will I wear this out for a special occasion? No, certainly not as up close/in person it is very clear that this is a fake wig/halo. In photos I think it looks fire but for in person I would say this halo did not make the cut. Overall, if you are a photographer or creative type and want some extra hair then this is perfect. If you are hoping to find date night or wedding party ready extensions then these are not them! Fun for dressing up and taking photos at home for sure, but these are not really street safe if you ask me.

Item 3) Magnetic Eyelashes – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B089JHV2TK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have wanted the Glamnetic or Silly George Lash kit for forever but ya girl cannot justify spending 75 plus dollars on fake lashes. So to Amazon I go!

I decided to try the Paulinrise magnetic eyelash set for less than 10 dollars because why not, even if they suck at least I did not spend 50 dollars on them.

The verdict – These are pretty great for sub ~10 dollars! They stayed on all night, were not that terrible to apply and overall looked nice. I think these are awesome for someone who likes the option to wear false lashes for a night out or special occasion but is not a hardcore false lashes everyday type. I think for a wedding or something I would want to spend a bit more to get a better product but for random nights out I have to say this dupe did the trick!

Item 4) Oversized Vintage Crewneck – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08LNLXSTL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have been obsessed with the vintage hoodie look and recycled crewnecks that have a good worn in look to them but I am sorry Princess Polly, 100 dollars for a sweatshirt is highway robbery. I was skeptical of finding a good dupe on Amazon as finding a sub 20 dollar vintage looking item from an online retailer is a gamble no matter how savvy you shop, but I decided to try nonetheless.

Decided on this listing as it had a cute photo and decent reviews however I was skeptical of if this item would even end up looking like the photos and unfortunately I was right.

The end rating – I give this purchase a 3 – Is is a long sleeve navy top that is oversized? Yes, does it look vintage or worn in at all? No, not even a little bit. I have to say this one was somewhat of an epic fail, the “sweatshirt” is really just a giant long sleeve shirt. It does not look even in the slightest “vintage” at all. Will I wear it to relax in, sure, is it the cute fashion stable I wanted, no.

Item 5) Vintage/Hype Girl Sunglasses – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BNHRLDW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I am so here for the vintage sunglass look that I could not wait for summer to get myself a pair of these fierce looking shades. I decided I wanted a white and black pair since why not and was shocked to find how easy it was to find the exact style I was looking for on Amazon!

The 2 pack set I found was less than 20 dollars and I cannot lie I was expecting to get a pair of super cheap plastic dollar store sunglasses. Damn was I wrong!

The verdict – These are amazing! Do not walk, run to get yourself these glasses. They are not only fly as hell but they are sturdy and decently high quality for an Amazon find. I could not be happier with these and have to say these are a solid 12/10 as they greatly exceeded my expectations! Overall, I am obsessed!

So to conclude this episode of Amazing Amazon Dupes, I have a few pieces of advice for finding trendy dupes online.

  • Reviews, reviews, reviews – Read as many reviews as possible and look at customer photos. This will be the biggest help when it comes to choose which dupe is the best of all as there tends to be many options to choose from. Even one really bad review can get me to re-think a purchase if it is recent enough and there is good evidence to support the claims.
  • Size up/ measure yourself – Most dupes are not going to be the same size as your traditional fast fashion finds because they are coming directly from the factory or manufacturer in most cases. Assume the sizing will be weird and be sure to look at the sizing chart and take some measurements for yourself. I typically wear a 2-4 in bottoms and I ended up measuring myself for the tennis skirt and buying a large/XL as the sizing chart was really wonky. The large fit perfectly even though it was a size 8/10. Do not assume the sizing will be normal, as chances are the item will be much larger or smaller than you are thinking it will be.
  • Assume the quality is low – Sub 20$ sunglasses tend to get a bad wrap for being pastic-y and cheap looking, with good reason. When buying an item on Amazon that is 50-75% cheaper than a brand name version you should not assume the quality will be the same or even close to similar. Prepare yourself for a bad craft project and then be shook when the dupe is better than you thought. It is way better to be good surprised than bad surprised when your new purchase is not as cheap looking as it cost in reality.
  • Weigh the pros /cons – Is this an item you hope to have a year from now? If so maybe re-evaluate whether you want a dupe or the real thing. Some items are worth spending on, others not so much. You have to decide if this is something you want to cherish forever or love for a season or two. Who knows, you may even love the dupe so much you decide to go all in for the real thing!

Dagne Dover Landon Carryall Review

Dagne Dover Landon Carryall Review

Finding a cute gym bag that is multi-functional is a challenge! It makes me so sad to see stylish, full-grown adults toting around old drawstring bags from high school to the gym. As someone who loves fashion but also function finding something other than an old backpack to bring to the gym has been hard. Pockets and compartments are music to my ears and multiple straps are a must for me. Doing some research, I knew I wanted a bag that could be used for more than just going to the gym, but I also didn’t need another giant tote bag.

Dagne Dover, immediately came to mind when I started listing the features that were non negotiable for me when it came to a gym bag. I already had their famous Allyn Tote for work, which is a lifesaver with all of its nifty pockets and compartments designed for my frequent traveler and commuter life. I decided my perfect gym bag was the other Dagne Dover crowd pleaser the Landon Carryall Tote. The Landon Carryall comes in a variety of sizes and colors to find any personal style aesthetic and for any and all travel needs. What I love the most about this bag is how light and water resistant it is! This carryall is so easy to stuff full of workout accessories and extra clothes without adding a ton of weight to the bag, it truly is magical.

Whether I am going on a quick overnight trip or hitting an after work WOD this bag is my go-to! I love the thoughtful details such as the way the bag can be expanded by unbuttoning the side flaps for more top space as well as the outside pocket that fits my car keys and face mask. Originally, I was not wild about the neoprene fabric but as I have gone through rainstorms and snowstorms, I have found the fabric to be perfect for protecting my bag from the elements. Spill some water? No problem, the Landon Carryall will dry fast and stain free!

The Case For Functional Fashion

The Case For Functional Fashion

One thousand blisters and barefoot walks home later I have finally found comfort in functional fashion choices. I used to be a habitual uncomfortable outfit and shoe wearer. Despite all of my better judgements and decision-making abilities I used to constantly choose discomfort over comfort when it came to my fashion choices. Stuffing and shoving my body into uncomfortable and completely un functional for life clothes and shoes was a regular ritual for me when getting dressed to go out to parties or events.

Younger me was always so obsessed with fitting in and seeming “cool” or “trendy” that I would completely ignore my throbbing feet or suffocated arms because I was convinced that it was cool to sacrifice comfort for fashion. I used to make fun of my mom’s Teva and Merrill sandals in the summer because I thought they were the least fashionable thing I had ever seen. Now the thought of wearing Tevas to work is dream come true for me!

It wasn’t until I was out of college that I slowly started to reject mainstream fashion trends that did not align or equal outfit comfort for me. I stopped spending money on clothing and shoes that were not full day comfortable for me and slowly started to re frame my hierarchy of priority when it came to my fashion choices. Comfort is so key for me now, especially when it comes to my office and going out clothes! Nothing bothers me more than coming into the office and feeling uncomfortable with my clothes or shoes and making the wrong outfit choice can leave me distracted and bothered all day. Same goes for my going out outfits! Some of my best nights out at the bars in Denver have been when I was wearing “scrubby” outfits that were comfortable to move and dance in.

Functional fashion is a huge turn on for me when I am shopping! I love investing in pieces that are functional for life and easy to wear. Most my most frequently worn outfits are ones that are comfortable and functional because they make me feel my best. Even the chicest of fashionistas needs to have a good walking shoes, so why not make 90% of your shoe collection functional for everyday wear!

Gone are the days of 6-inch platform heels for me, but hello mules and slides. Any kind of backless shoe has a place in my closet, no more blisters and callouses for me!

My Favorite Mom Jeans

My Favorite Mom Jeans

I own a lot of pairs of jeans! Straight jeans, cropped jeans, ripped jeans, blue jeans.. the list goes on and on. You name it, I probably own it, but you will probably never catch me in a pair of skinny jeans.

For years I stuffed myself into skin-tight jeans, feeling self-conscious as ever seeing my athletic legs strapped in like space cadets before take-off. I forced these leg prisons on myself even though I knew they did not make me feel my best and it wasn’t until last year that I found the light at the end of my jean filled dreams. Finally, mom jeans and non skinny jeans in general were having a moment in 2019. What a revolution to see pants that were high-waisted and not skin-tight making headlines in fashion magazines. I was hooked immediately! I loved the way the straight leg style cinched in my waist and tapered down giving me a long lean look that balanced out my athletic frame. All across Pinterest and magazines I was seeing women rejecting skinny jeans in favor of straight leg and looser styles.

My time had come! I could hardly contain my excitement last year when I started combing the mall and internet for some new jeans to add to my collection. Straight leg and mom style pants were the answer to all of my jean issues, so naturally I bought them in every color and style I could find! My favorite jeans right now happen to be from Urban Outfitters. I absolutely love the BDG Slim Straight style and the BDG Mom Jean, both are super comfy and flattering.

I fear the jean section no more, now that I have found 2 styles that I know work for me/my body and fit my fashion taste. J. Crew also has some great cuts for athletic frames and petite women. Their high waisted utilities jean, and straight leg jean, are both a close 2nd place for me in terms of style and stretch. What I love about J. Crew is their focus on polished colors and clean lines, which makes all of their jeans great for a casual day at the office or going to a work happy hour. I have my size and cut down pat now and do not even think twice when I see my favorite styles go on sale! Jeans are by far the most versatile item in my closet and once winter hits in Denver I pretty much live in them. Investing in good fitting and great feeling jeans is a non negotiable for me. I would much rather have 4 pairs of good fitting jeans than 12 meh fitting jeans.

Jeans shopping does not need to make you run for the hills and hide! The key to finding the right pants is patience and try on time. Allow yourself plenty of time to try on various styles or if shopping online buy more than one style and size for comparison. Nothing is worst than buying a pair of pants online to have them arrive leaving you frustrated and annoyed that they don’t fit the way you were hoping. Also remember that it is not you who must fit the jeans, but rather the goal is to find jeans that fit you! Jeans are not your enemy and should not make you feel uncomfortable. If your jeans do not spark joy then you should donate them in favor of finding jeans that do light your inner fire.

Stop Wearing Outfits That Make You Uncomfortable

Stop Wearing Outfits That Make You Uncomfortable

Why do we try to force ourselves to wear things that make us feel uncomfortable? I used to wear outfits that I thought were cool or would help me fit in even if I felt super self-conscious and awkward. This led me to picking apart my body when I looked in the mirror and swirling with negative thoughts when I saw someone else rocking the same look with what I thought was sheer confidence.

Why did I do that for so many years, when there were plenty of other outfits in my closet that I knew I could rock without a second though. The answer is that I was deeply uncomfortable with my body and rather than trying to find clothes that flattered me and I felt comfortable in, I was worried about what other people thought of me leading me to feel compelled to conform to traditional fashion trends. Wearing that trendy or edgy look that made me feel self-conscious never made my night better. It actually made my night worst because I would spend every formal event or party pulling and tugging at my clothes trying to make it work when clearly I would have been happier wearing the outfit that I knew flattered my body and made me feel confident.

So what shifted? As I have gotten more comfortable in my body and learned to respect and love my shape as it is I have really started to reject the idea that just because a style or fashion item is popular that I should wear or buy it.  I came to the conclusion that I do not look like Kylie Jenner nor ever will I so why would I want to dress like someone other than myself in clothing that makes me feel shitty about my body.

Over the last year and a half I have also begun to take a critical look at my relationship with my clothing and my body and I have realized that I have been holding on to a lot of clothing items that don’t flatter my body anymore or spark joy. I have slowly purged my closet of clothing that no longer makes me feel beautiful or confident and have begun to re-build my wardrobe with items that did bring me joy and made me feel fine as hell when I get dressed.

I say no more to skin tight skinny and jeans and have rejected mainstream trends that I feel uncomfortable wearing. I felt a weight was lifted off me after I donated my last pair of old skinny jeans. Skinny jeans had always been a symbol of thinness. A status symbol of women who felt confident enough to wear jeans that looked like they were painted on their perfectly sculpted bodies. To me skinny jeans represented the burning desire to be the smallest and thinnest version of myself from when I was younger that led me to wrecking my metabolism as a young adult.

So as of recently I have said no to skinny jeans and instead bought the jeans that I felt looked best on me. It turns out straight leg and mom style jeans were the answer to all my anxiety filled jean shopping trips! I have now filled my closet with flattering pants and have vowed to never buy a pair of pants that I don’t feel 10000% comfortable in again.

I challenge you stop wearing clothes that make you feel bad about yourself and instead wear the hell out of your favorite outfit instead even if it’s not the “trendy” choice!

Easy, Breezy Bottoms For Summer

Easy, Breezy Bottoms For Summer

Who here has been personally victimized by loose summer pants? Dresses are great for keeping cool on hot summer days but there are only so many days I can wear dresses before I longingly miss my favorite pair of jeans. Finding comfortable, flattering summer pants and skirts can be super tricky when you have an athletic frame. Loose, light fabric pants are a great option for days when the temperatures are reaching the high 90’s and you have exhausted your sundress collection or simply want to shake things up.

Finding the right summer pant can be challenge however finding flattering summer pants to fit a petite athletic frame is even trickier. Raise your hand if you have ever put on a pair of wide-cut, flowy, bohemian style pants and immediately ripped them off because they made you feel fluffy and marshmallowy! Loose, paper bag style pants are great for summer but often are too long for me, or cut off my body in a weird way making me appear short and wide.

When searching for summer pants, I gravitate towards mid rise, neutral colors and muted prints that won’t overwhelm my small frame. Mid rise pants help to cinch in my waist, and the darker colors slim my bottom half giving me a flattering shape to work with and helps to hide any unwanted bottom sweat. On especially warm days, my go to is to pair a looser, light colored top with a more structured neutral toned bottom like these super cute sailor pants from Zara and white basic blouse from H&M.

This look is perfect for a busy day at the office but is also great for weekend errands or even a low key brunch with friends! What I love about this outfit is the light airiness of the fabrics and the loose fit which allow me to move and feel comfortable outside even on the hottest of Denver days.

For me, when it comes to summer fashion comfort key! A great summer outfit is only as good as it feels to wear it when its a scorching summer day.
